While waiting for the wily wild turkey to appear one often sees other species of wildlife such as gray squirrels and fox squirrels. When I was young there were plenty of gray squirrels in our area, but one seldom encountered a fox squirrel.

Today we have a thriving fox squirrel population. These animals are much larger with a different coloration than the gray squirrel.

Observing these animals helps one pass the time until the primary subject arrives, and sometimes photographing them can be as rewarding as the larger birds and animals, yet the squirrels do not thrill one as much as when a large gobbler appears close to the photographic blind and lets loose with a tremendous gobble.

Marvelous shots, I mean photographs. I just have a turkey walk by our front garden of Cape Cod house this morning. I do not have the chance to take out my camera.

I recognize the colouring of the fox squirrel, they are one type visiting our yard but I always thought they were just well-fed grays.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos...all of them. Your composition and focus is wonderful. I photographed wild turkeys in Big Sur, California once, but with video. I loved watching how they strut around and make unbelievable noise! And, they were in such a scenic place too!

ReplyDeleteThanks for the feed back on the video I posted. The down side of the D90 is there is no jack for a remote micraphone like the newer D300S. With new glass and tripod a new body is not in the cards for a couple of years.
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy your spring gobbler photographs. The greys were captureds very nice with natural settings. I ran into the white squirrel again a couple of days ago and of all times I did not have the camera along. Now to keep looking for him again.
Willard: An encounter with a Fox Squirrel in Kent is impossible. The Black Squirrels and Gray Squirrels have taken over. You always have beautiful photography.

I've been to Benezette many times (my brother has a camp near there) and have seen the elk, but at night and not with an adequate camera to photograph them properly. Your photograph is amazing!
