March 31: A Beautiful Spring Day

Shortly after sunup this morning I spied these deer interacting. They are brother and sister, but are not the same age. The buck is standing in back and will be two years old this June, while the doe will be four years old. He was licking and nibbling the hair on the back of her neck and top of the head and she was enjoying every moment of it.

"Siblings"

They definitely were not there yesterday, but this afternoon the Coltsfoot were in full bloom by a back country road. They are one of the earliest blooming wildflowers in our area and are often mistaken for dandelion.

"Coltsfoot"

Photographing a turkey as he prepared to go to roost brought a fitting conclusion to an exceptional spring day.

"Flying Up"

Turkeys spend the night roosting in tall trees to protect them from predators while they are sleeping.

Great shots Willard. Love the deer.. they have to be so itchy this time of year.. and wonderful photo of the turkey launching as well.. Season opened here today, I am still hoping to get some strutting pics this year, but so far the snow hasn't been cooperating.. stay warm..

The deer and the turkey are my favorites. I wish I had the lens and then I wish I had the deer and finally a flying turkey.

I've never heard of coltsfoot. They are really pretty. And, I never knew turkeys spend the night roosting in tall trees. Thank you for sharing the beautiful photos and for teaching us something new. You always provide interesting and helpful info.

Hello Willard. I am trying to catch up with everyone today as I have not had much time lately. hose buck are so lovely but it is a good thing we do not have to groom each other like that. :) Do you know if their teeth moves to assist the grooming? I know this sounds strange but some of our buck species do it. Great action in the turkey shot too.

Joan,

I have seen them nibbling with the teeth, but it usually seems to be just licking and nuzzling. I suspect they do bite ticks, etc. on one another.
